Venator Display
A lowercase display typeface that merges the historical elegance of blackletter with contemporary, fantastical edge.
The Problem
Blackletter is a family of scripts rich in historical value and visual complexity. Their ornate and rigid forms often appear archaic to contemporary audience. Therefore, the challenge was to reimagine this style for an alternative, modern crowd.
The Solution
Venator is a lowercase display typeface that merges the historical elegance of blackletter with contemporary edge. Its name — Latin for ‘hunter’ — puts the viewer in the mind of a monster hunter from a dark fantasy realm where beasts and abominations run wild. The aggressive letterforms evoke imagery of swords and arrows, fangs and talons. Tailored for the alternative crowd, Venator is ideal for applications such as flyers, book covers, album art and apparel design.
The Process
The typeface was developed over a rigorous process of iteration, feedback and refinement. Early explorations drew heavily from traditional blackletter calligraphy, studying their structures, proportions and stroke logic. These foundations were then reinterpreted through a modern lens —simplifying certain features and exaggerating others, testing the limits of legibility and expression.
